Meet the Staff!
My name is Sara Thornton, and in 2002, I graduated from NBCC, Fredericton, with the highest academic standing in Human Services. From here, I went on to work as youth counsellor. After giving birth to my daughter, Fallon, in 2003, I relocated to Durham Bridge, where I owned and operated Little Geniuses Community Day Care Home (2004-2007), licensed by Family and Community Services. While I felt that my small day care was exceptionally successful, I closed the operation to further pursue my education at UNB. While at UNB, I maintained a 4.1 GPA and won numerous awards including the prestigious President’s Sir Howard Douglas Scholar Award for academic excellence and active participation in extracurricular activities. In 2010, I graduated from UNB with a Bachelor of Arts, Psychology (First Class Honours). My Thesis (2010), on “Parent-Child Sexual Health Communication,” won The Canadian Psychology Association Certificate of Academic Excellence. In 2010, I was accepted to UNB’s PhD Program in Clinical Psychology and awarded the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Despite this achievement, I have decided to return to my primary passion: childcare. Currently, I have completed the New Brunswick Early Learning and Child Care Curriculum Framework training and continue to attend professional development workshops. My work has been featured in the Early Childhood Care & Education New Brunswick’s (ECCENB) “Growing Together” journal. In my free time, I enjoy writing and traveling with my family.

Throughout my adolescent and young adult life, I worked as a certified horseback riding instructor teaching beginner riders. These experiences combined with my co-operative education experience at Little Geniuses Day Care Centre Inc. led to my interest in pursuing a career working with children.

I have a beautiful son and value to ability to care for children as your own while at day care. This value was fostered by my mother, who has been a child care provider since I was a child. I look forward to growing as an Early Childhood Educator, and aiding in making Little Geniuses Day Care Centre Inc. the best environment for all children to flourish in.
My name is Meghan Nye, and I have a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources, which I received in 2007 from the University of New Brunswick. On my graduation day, I flew to South Korea where I taught public school for 2 years. While living abroad, I discovered a passion for Early Childhood Education. Upon returning to Canada, I was offered a position at the YMCA of Fredericton in the After-School Program and I worked my way up to Assistant Manager of the daycare. I am looking forward to being involved in programs again, and working with the Little Geniuses team. Some of my hobbies include fly tying and cooking; which I am excited to incorporate into my classroom!

The early years are very important for positive child development, and I cannot wait to nurture children and help them learn every day!
Preschool Room Educator
My name is Sarah Somerville and I am the proud mother of a wonderful little girl. A few years ago, I decided to open my own in-home daycare, so that I could spend more time with her. After successfully running my daycare for two years, I decided to enroll at the Atlantic Business College where I received both an Early Childhood Education Diploma and Educational Assistant Diploma. I am also trained in First and CPR, Food Safety, and have a certificate from the “Talk with Me” Program. In my spare time, I love reading, music, art, and science; and if I’m being really honest, comic books!
Junior Toddler Educator
My name is Tamira Holmes and I graduated from the Early Childhood Education program at Loyalist College Ontario in 2014. At my last place of employment, I acquired experience working with children from infant to school age. I believe children learn best through play in a natural environment. It is my hope that we can create a fun, loving, and warm environment for children to play, where they feel safe to explore and learn. I believe children have just as much to teach us as we do them. Observations of children can provide insight into what the children are interested in, and can show us how each child learns differently. With this knowledge, we can then develop a program that allows children to learn in their own way and create an environment where they are free to build friendships and explore the world around them.
Morning Preschool and Main Street After-School Room Educator
My name is Shelby Campbell, and I graduated from UNBSJ with a Bachelors of Science and a major in psychology. I have over 10 years experience working with youth of all ages. Preschool Room Educator
My name is Brooke Bulmer and I graduated from St. Thomas University with both a Bachelor of Arts and Education Degree in 2015 and 2016 respectively. I have worked and volunteered in the past with students of all ages in the Fredericton area, each time with a focus on literacy and writing. I have always been very passionate about teaching the future leaders and what better way to do so than by starting at Little Geniuses Day Care Centre Inc. In my spare time, my hobbies include reading, camping and hiking, and curling up with my two cats in front of Netflix.
Senior Toddler Room Educator
My name is Shannon DeMerchant and I am a graduate of St. Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. From there, I went on to graduate from NBCC with honors in Journalism. Upon graduation I worked as a freelance journalist for Brunswick News for a number of years. It was during this time period that I also stumbled into the world of childcare. Although I never lost my love for the written word, I also discovered that I had a passion for early childhood education. I spent five years working at the Fredericton YMCA, predominately within both the Junior Kindergarten and After School programs, as well as at Little Geniuses Day Care Centre Inc. both full-time in the Senior Toddler class and casually in 2017. Since we never know what life is going to throw our way, I have been studying Advanced Holistic Nutrition, and after a brief hiatus to focus on my studies, I am now excited to be returning to Little Geniuses. I have missed my tiny friends at the daycare!
Little Leaders Program!
Little Leaders is a project-based program that is designed for children in grades 5 and 6, who are seeking to challenge themselves, and to enhance their childcare experience. The goal of this program is to prepare children for leaving after-school care, and to foster independence, confidence, goal setting, decision making, and leadership skills. To enroll in the Little Leaders Program, students must express an interest to the Director or Assistant Director, and parents/guardians must sign the Consent for Little Leaders Program form. Once enrolled, students will be issued a free Little Leaders shirt, and will be required to participate in an orientation session as well as monthly meetings with the Director and/or Assistant Director. During the duration of the program, students will have the opportunity to assist Educators in various classroom activities, including student lead learning, outings, games, and projects. At the end of the Little Leaders Program, students will be issued a Certificate of Completion. This is a great opportunity for students to gain a variety of experiences working with children ages 6 months to 5 years, and to potentially obtain a reference! Important to note, is that at no time will Little Leaders be left alone with children, or be able to perform many of the duties of our trained Educators (e.g., changing diapers, First Aid, etc.). As this is a consensual program, and still deemed as after-school childcare, students can participate in their regularly scheduled After-School Program at anytime. There are no reductions in fees; however, all costs related to activities associated with this program will be covered by Little Geniuses Day Care Centre Inc.
